Rug Size & Style Guide

Visual Balance

A rug that is too small can make the room look disjointed, while one that is too large can overwhelm the space. Aim for a balanced look that complements the room’s proportions.

Style Preference

Decide on the rug’s role in the room—whether it’s a focal point or a subtle addition to the decor.

Customization

If standard sizes don’t fit well, consider customizing a rug to perfectly match your room’s dimensions and layout.

Living Room Rugs

  • In the Living Room, the rug size impacts the room’s look and feel. A small rug can make the space appear crowded and disjointed, while an oversized rug may overwhelm the furniture, diminishing the room’s depth and dimension. Balance is essential for harmony.
  • Styling Tip : Aim for a “Goldilocks effect” with your rug small enough to fit the space but large enough to unify your furniture. This balance grounds the pieces and creates an open, inviting feel.
  • Ideally, all the furniture pieces should be fully placed on the rug. If this is not possible, choose a rug that allows at least the front legs of your couch and the full chairs to rest on it. Typically, an 8’x10’ or 9’x12’ rug works well. In smaller spaces, use a rug that accommodates at least two furniture legs. Alternatively, layer smaller rugs to create the illusion of a larger rug and mix styles.
  • In open plan seatings, rugs can be used to segregate 2 areas example the living and dining or 2 separate seating areas.

Dining Room Rugs

  • In a dining room, a bespoke rug adds texture, pattern, and color, contrasting with hard surfaces and creating an inviting, comfortable space. Rugs also absorb sound, essential for dining rooms used for entertaining.
  • As the table is the focal point, choose a rug that comfortably frames the table and adds personality to the space.
  • Choose a rug large enough to fit all four chair legs, even when pulled out. Ideally, the rug should be about 4 feet larger than the table.
  • Choose a design either with a border or repeating patterns and avoid central medallions which will likely get hidden under the table.

Bedroom Rugs

  • Ensure ample space on both sides of your bed. A rug too close to the bed’s width may appear cramped. Allow about 2 feet of rug on three sides of your bed.
  • For sizes, try 5’x8’ for a Twin, 8’x10’ for a Queen, and 9’x12’ for a King. If space is tight, adjust the rug’s position or use two smaller rugs on either side or a runner at the bed’s foot.

  • Create a warm and functional environment by using runners and accent rugs to anchor high-traffic and utility areas.
  • For hallway runners, choose a rug that leaves 8-12 inches of flooring visible on all sides. Standard runner sizes are typically 2-3 feet wide and 6-14 feet long. Measure your hallway’s length and width, then select a runner that fits comfortably, allowing for easy movement and enhancing the space’s aesthetic appeal.
